# Relay races

> Several riders sharing one team result.

In a relay, riders take turns and their laps add up to one team result. The team
finishes when it has completed all its legs.

## Setting the race up

When you create the race, set the format to **relay** and decide three things:

| Setting       | Options                                                                                                  | Which to pick                              |
| ------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| **Legs** | How many each team must complete | Usually the number of riders per team |
| **Leg order** | **Fixed** — each rider is assigned a specific leg. **Any order** — riders go in whatever order they like | Any order, unless your rules say otherwise |
| **Bibs** | **One each** — every rider has their own number. **Shared** — one number physically handed over | One each is easier to time |

## Building teams

Teams are created from the relay panel on the timing screen.

Each team gets a join code automatically. Share it with the team and their
riders can put themselves on the same team when they register, rather than you
assembling every team by hand.

<Note>
  A relay team is scoped to one race. It has nothing to do with a rider's club
  or the [Teams](/teams/overview) section — it exists for this race and no
  other.
</Note>

## Timing it

The timing screen shows a **Relay teams** panel above the usual finish list
whenever the selected race is a relay.
Each row is a team:

* Team name and status.
* Legs completed — `2 / 4`.
* Best leg time across the team.
* Total time once they've finished.

Time it exactly like any other race — record each rider as they cross. Laps are
credited to their team automatically, and the team finishes when its last leg
comes in.

## Pulling a team out

The menu on each team's row lets an admin mark the whole team **DNF** or
**DSQ**, or put them back to racing.

Doing this doesn't change the individual riders' own results — a rider who
finished their leg still shows as having finished it.

## If teams change after you've set up

Riders registering late, or teams reshuffling on the morning? Press **Refresh
relay**. It picks up the current teams and recalculates every
team result from the laps already recorded — nothing is lost.

Worth doing once on race morning, after late registrations close.
